Tooth Extractions
There are many reasons to have a tooth extracted, all centered on improving your oral health or alleviating pain. Dr. Salomon may recommend tooth extraction because of severe tooth decay, periodontal disease, or a break in the tooth that cannot be repaired. He may also suggest tooth extraction in preparation for orthodontic treatment, to prevent wisdom teeth problems, or in preparation for dental implants.
Do I Need Tooth Extraction?
There are several signs you may need dental extractions to protect your oral health or improve your bite. If you are experiencing any of these issues, Dr. Salomon can help you decide whether tooth extraction is the answer:
- You have a severely decayed tooth that cannot be fixed with a filling or crown.
- A root canal has failed to correct an infected pulp.
- A broken or fractured tooth.
- Your teeth are crowded, and your bite is out of alignment.
- You have an impacted wisdom tooth.
- You want to replace your teeth with implants or dentures.
- Severe tooth pain that cannot be corrected by other means.
- An impacted tooth trapped in the jawbone that does not erupt.
Dr. Salomon and our oral surgery team provide individual care for each and every patient. Whether you need a tooth extracted or missing teeth replaced with dental implants, we're here to help you.

Tooth extractions must be done with precision and skill to avoid damaging surrounding tissues and adjacent teeth. Surgical tooth extractions are typically performed by Dr. Salomon under sedation for the patient’s comfort and safety. He makes an incision into the gums and, sometimes, the jawbone to surgically remove the tooth. After the tooth is removed, the incision is closed with dissolving sutures.
Proper aftercare is a must following tooth extractions. For details on home care after tooth extraction, take a look at our “After Extractions” and “After Multiple Extractions” information under “Surgical Instructions.”
Do I Need to Replace the Extracted Teeth?
We always recommend replacing missing teeth after extraction to preserve the integrity of the mouth. Missing teeth can lead to decay and gum disease. You may also have difficulty eating, speaking, and chewing if some of your teeth are missing. Finally, when a tooth is removed, it leaves behind an empty socket in the jawbone that can deteriorate rapidly, leading to bone loss and distortion of facial features. There are several options for replacing your teeth that Dr. Salomon can review with you in detail before your scheduled tooth extractions.
Do Tooth Extractions Hurt?
Surgical extractions require an incision and sutures. Following surgical extraction, patients may have some minor pain and inflammation that can be alleviated with Ibuprofen or Tylenol. Ice packs can also help. In the case of complex wisdom teeth extraction, the pain and swelling may last up to a week but begins to improve on the third day.
